The gender approach in NESTORE: social coaching
Men and women are unequally at risk of loneliness and may have different preferences to engage in social activities. The University of Zurich explains why so and how NESTORE has developed recommendations for social participation accordingly.
In the social domain, gender is a strong influential factor influencing the social network composition, quality of social ties and thus the risk of social exclusion. The fact that women outlive men is also a reason for women being at greater risk of loneliness in older age.
NESTORE proposes activities based on the uptake of new unstructured activities that provide opportunities for social interaction. Thus both men and women will be able to select those activities that fall within their areas of interest rather than forcing a particular (stereotypical) type of activity (e.g., knitting vs. metal work) on both men and women.
